Job Description

The Automation Specialist plans, designs, implements and supports monitoring and control systems utilized in the operation of liquids pipelines measurement facilities pump stations and transfer facilities.

  • Design, develop, test and maintain PLC based automation systems (Primarily GE Automation). Review all new PLC programs and program changes to ensure all MOCs and standards are followed.
  • Develop and structure operational and programming standards for PLC.
  • Work closely with IT Network Services and have deep understanding of automation system networks including specifying communications protocols, communications media and associated hardware.
  • Interface and coordinate Control System work with the Pipeline Operations Control Center (SCADA Group) and coordinate automation projects between SCADA group and contracted PLC support when needed.
  • Work closely with Engineering and SCADA to develop and follow process to create and integrate commissioning documents (Cause and Effect documents, SCADA Workbooks, etc).
  • Develop estimates on PLC and automation instrumentation hardware requirements.
  • Read and interpret electrical control and instrumentation drawings and provide reviews of design/construction drawing packages.
  • Review all PLC system purchases and panel fabrication to assure standards are met.
  • Red-line PLC panel designs, wiring, and drawing standards as project develops.
  • Support integration of facilities and design changes with the control center.
  • Provide technical expertise in mechanical, instrument, electrical and/or automation specifications and standards as required.
  • Specify and procure instrumentation and controls related equipment used in automation systems.
  • Provide on-site services including oversight of system installation, lead commissioning efforts and supplying troubleshooting support as required.
  • Work Automation Management to develop contractor bid documents, conduct bid process and select contractor throughout automation capital projects.
  • Provide engineering support to Operations and Technical Support Personnel for all related software and hardware, including end devices.
  • Accountable for completing tasks with quality compliance with applicable codes and standards and on schedule.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an accredited university.
  • Experience with control system design and programming may be considered in lieu of a bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of 5 years of Instrumentation and Control Systems Integration or related/applicable experience.
  • Proven experience configuring and programming GE Automation PLC Systems. Ability to program Schneider Electric SCADAPack is desired (Telepace Studio), and Allen Bradley PLCs.
  • Ability to learn additional and/or new programming languages and skills as needed.
  • Experience in designing and implementing communications networks such as Modbus over TCP.
  • Experience with designing and specifying physical media used in communications including but not limited to copper cabling fiber optic cabling and radio transmission.
  • Knowledge and/or application experience with national and international instrument electrical and controls standards.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in the design and operation of automation systems for liquids facilities. Natural gas facilities including compressor stations storage facilities is a plus.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings and diagrams electrical schematics piping and instrument drawings (P&IDs) flow charts and cause and effect diagrams.
  • Ability to perform job responsibilities with minimal guidance or supervision.
  • Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work with both company and non-company personnel to accomplish goals.
  • PC-based skills including MS Office product including Access. (Visual Basic for Applications VBA is a plus).
  • Proficiency in basic engineering skills and possession of well-developed analytical and problem solving skills to address complex technical matters.
  • Must maintain a high degree of attention to detail while managing multiple assignments with various deadlines and responsibility levels.
  • Travel (20% - 50%) often overnight to company sites for system installation, commissioning and maintenance as well as to attend meetings and conferences. Weekend travel is rarely required.
  • Must be on-call 24/7 to troubleshoot emergency calls.
  • Must be aware of company and government safety regulations and maintain a high regard for the safety of company employees and assets and the general public.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Previous Field /Startup Engineering Design Engineering and/or Operations experience desired.
  • Excellent knowledge of the safety profession and ability to identify select and implement alternative courses of action.
  • Be able to work outside in extreme temperatures.
  • Be able to climb stairs ladders walk over difficult terrain and stand for long periods of time.
  • Participate in random DOT Drug and Alcohol testing program.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is normally performed in a climate-controlled environment, where exposure to conditions of extreme heat/cold, poor ventilation, fumes, and gases is very limited. Noise level is moderate and includes sounds of a normal office environment. No environmental hazards are encountered in performance of normal job duties.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work normally requires finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination to operate computer keyboard at moderate skill level. Work may require occasional pushing, pulling, or carrying 20-pound objects such as files, documents, and computer printouts. Work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve standing and walking for brief periods.
